Top 11 Things to Remember when filling out your brackets 1. Never choose a team with a Freshman point guard to win the National Championship. Even though the game features many more frosh stars, in the title game, this neophytes tend to choke and have a lot of turnovers 2. Looking for an upset in the first 2 rounds? Look for a team that shoots 3s well and/or plays fantastic defense. Then pick an opponent that has been known to go cold shooting from time to time. This rule is why so many 12s beat 5 seeds. 3. Live by the 3, die by the 3. Sooner or later, usually in the Elite 8 or earlier, a team needs to have an inside scoring presence and the ability to drive to the hoop and draw fouls. No team stays hot on 3s for 6 games. 4. Pick teams with a good 7-8 man rotation to go all the way. This doesn't mean they don't have starters, it means they have strong bench players, at least one guard and 2 big men to come of the bench. 5. Stanford is one of the worst teams in terms of living up to seeding 6. For small conference and mid major teams, check which ones played a lot of tournament teams prior to conference play, how did they do? One team in particular played well against many of the elite schools this year. 7. Check to see how a team did overall against NCAA tourney teams, then subtract out their conference record to see how well they did. Don't choose teams that went 0 for non conference against tournament teams. 8. Check road records 9. Check out free throw percentages and if you have to flip a coin between selections pick the team with the better percentage 10. Make sure the team you pick to win it all has won at least 1 game in overtime 11.Pick at least one Big Ten team for the Elite 8. Beyond being loyal to our conference, between MSU, Purdue and Wisconsin, one of these teams is tough enough and talented enough to go that far, but not a National Title. This year I think its the Badgers. |
